I made this birdhouse at the request of an awesome customer who missed out on a similar birdhouse I donated to the silent auction at the Wild Arts Festival.

The body is cherry. The roof is redwood. The pewas (bowties) in the roof are cherry. The spire and perch are made from old forged iron nails. The inside is painted Matisse Orange. The lid is held on with two copper pins that can be pried out with a butter knife and easily pushed back in. Not counting the spire, the bird house is 5 1/2” tall and the roof is 7 1/2” in diameter.

The Audubon Society is doing great work that gets more important everyday as we see the effects of climate change. They are trying to raise at least $100,000 this week. Buy this birdhouse and help them reach their goal.

The birdhouse is made from cherry, walnut, wenge, forged cast iron, and steel wire.

Dimensions: Body is 4” tall and 4 1/2” in diameter. The lid is 7 1/2” in diameter. The perch is 1 1/2” long and the spire is 3 1/2” long. The hole is 1 1/8” and the inside cavity is 4” in diameter.

Round bottom big leaf maple bowl with great spalting (the black lines). This wood is from the huge tree that fell on our house in October.

7” x 4 1/2”. Turned green with an end grain orientation and finished with several coats of tung oil and wax.

Big Leaf Maple vase. 5” x 4”. Wall thickness is about 3/16”. Finished with five or six Coats of tung oil. Turned green and given as a gift to Lyndal Anthony in the WOWs holiday gift exchange of 2020.

This is another amazing piece of highly figured Maple Burl from Northern California. I love the midcentury look of Danish modern furniture. 7 3/4” x 4 3/4” Finished with tung oil and wax.

Beautiful Black Walnut bowl with amazing figure. Handmade cherry chopsticks. Bowl is 5 3/4” x 3” finished with tung oil and wax.

This bowl is made from a really unusual piece of Myrtle wood from the Oregon Coast. Myrtle usually doesn’t have this much figure. I was able to make this bowl and a matching hollow form vessel (see my website) from this piece of wood. I’ve never seen patterning like this before. 5 1/2” x 3” finished with tung oil and wax.

Beautiful Big Leaf Maple rice bowl with really cool figure. I love the rice bowl shape. The foot lifts the bowl off the table and makes the bowl easy to hold and eat from if you choose to use the bowl for eating. 5 1/2” x 2 3/4” finished with tung oil and wax.

10.5” x 4.5” Maple Burl rice bowl with copper accent. This is one of the most spectacular pieces of Big Leaf Maple I have ever seen. It was selected as Turning of the Week on the Woodturners Unlimited Facebook Page for the last week of July. Finished with linseed oil.

Maple Burl Pot with a thorny crown and sandals (carved feet), 8” x 4.5”. This is a pretty cool piece of burl that I made into a unique pot. The carved feet are pretty subtle like Birkenstocks. They tend to lift the pot off the surface a bit.

This is my twist on the classic Tulip Bowl shape. On this version I undercut the rim so it folds back in itself and I turned the walls thin so it is lighter than expected. The walnut wood is oriented so the growth rings are parallel to the rim, which makes the bowl look striped and provide concentric rings when you look inside. 6 1/2” x 3 1/4” finished with tung oil.

Natural edge cherry bowl with 15 maple pewas that follow the natural cracks in the wood. It was turned wet with the pith (center of tree) in it so it warped into a cool oval shape. It varies from 6” to 7” tall and the diameter at the rim varies from 6 1/4” to 7”. It is finished with several layers of wipe-on polyurethane.

Another spectacular piece of Redwood from the Northern California Coast, this bowl has amazing tiger striped figure and 20 wenge pewas accenting natural cracks in the wood. 11” diameter x 4 1/4” tall, finished with tung oil and wax. This would make a great salad serving bowl or dough proofing bowl.

Materials: Spalted maple burl, twisted copper wire, and copper mesh.

Barbed wire is pretty nasty stuff that works as a fence by causing pain. It has been ubiquitous in the western U.S. since its invention in the late 1800's. The copper mesh represents the many things that get entangled and trapped on barbed wire fence. If you drive around the west very much you see all sorts of things stuck on the fences.

There are many different types of barbed wire. There are some really elaborate designs that I assume were made in an effort to get around patents. I modeled the two strands of barbed wire on this piece after one called "the defender", which is two wires twisted together with two point barbs wrapped around the twist. It is similar to what I remember as a kid growing in California. If you are interested in how barbed wire change the west, there is an interesting academic book about barbed wire called The Perfect Fence by Lyn Bennett and Scott Abbott and published by Texas A & M Press.

GIFTED: I turned this cherry vase earlier this summer. I finally got around to taking photos of it. It is 5” high x 4 1/2” round with three maple pewas and some copper infill.

SOLD: Little maple vessel with three feet. The bowl is 4” x 4” from some nicely figured and spalted maple, finished in satin poly.

This is the first bowl of a three bowl series based on Japanese bowl shapes. On this one I did not fill the voids to provide contrast with the refined shape. Finished with walnut oil and wax. 5" x 5"

This is the second bowl of a three bowl series based on Japanese bowl shapes. On this one I filled the voids inside and out with powdered copper. The copper celebrates the natural flaws in the wood - wabi sabi style. Finished with walnut oil and wax.

5” x 2 1/2” redwood bowl. This rice bowl shaped bowl has amazing figuring in the redwood that appears to glow with tiger stripes. I left the walls on this a little thicker than usual to show off the tiger stripe figure. It is finished with many coats of tung oil and buffed with wax.

Bend Fall Festival 2018

Corner Booth that won best of show at Fall Festival in Bend, Oregon October 5-6, 2018.

My pal Uma the golden retriever. She’s the sweetest dog I’ve ever known. I made the porch swing behind Uma based on a photo of a Lambert bench. I used cambia oak, which is cooked at 180 degrees to a dark brown, and rusted chains with gun metal bluing.

Black walnut waterfall bench with turned maple legs, cushions by sunbrella, and coasters by Kiriko. 5 feet x 16 inches x 12 inches.

SOLD: Repair of a 16” x 5” oak dough proofing bowl that a Portland family uses for a salad bowl (I did not make the original bowl - they bought it used from the bakery). The bowl fell from a counter and broke in half. Repaired with 12 maple pewas placed along the outside of the crack. Finish is original patina supplemented with walnut oil and linseed oil. I really love bringing a treasured keepsake back to life and hopefully making it an heirloom.

SOLD: A very rustic cherry bowl 9.25" x 4.5" with a bunch of wenge pewas holding it together. This is from a piece of cherry that the previous owners of our home used as a sort of landscape buffer. This piece was pretty rotten, but kind of cool. The cracks go all the way through.

SOLD: 13” x 5” Redwood Calabash. Sold at Salem Art Festival 2019. Was selected for Cover of the Day photo on the World of Woodturners website in July 2019. Super cool piece of Redwood with beautiful figure.

SOLD: 14” x 3 3/4” Maple Burl bowl with bark intrusions. This one was challenging to turn. The intrusion on the rim gives the bowl a sense of fragility that is rare in a thick walled heavy bowl. It is another beautiful piece of Big Leaf Maple.

SOLD: 4 1/2” x 5” redwood vase with seven wedge pewas (butterflies). Very nice piece of redwood.

7” x 3 1/4” x 3/8” Cascara Buckthorn Bowl with wenge pewas (butterflies), a black walnut feature on the rim, and walnut chopsticks. Food safe walnut oil and wax finish.

5” x 2” walnut hollow form with 3” maple finial dyed with acrylic and gilder’s wax. Inside the bowl if painted with acrylics.

A cascara buckthorn natural edge bowl. It is about 7" x 7" and 5/16” thick. It is a little thicker than usual, but I got a bit worried that it would come apart. This was a piece of crotch wood, which gave it some interesting character. There is also a tiny amount of spalting on the rim. The bark fell off before I turned it so I rolled the rim inward a bit for a softer look.

SOLD : 6 1/2” x 3 1/2” bowl from Cascara Buckthorn withe wenge butterflies. Cascara Buckthorn is a native wood in the northwest. It looks like a cross between cherry and Elm.

Native Americans used Cascara bark tea as a laxative. It was introduced to modern medicine in 1877, and is still used in modern pharmaceuticals. Natives also used it on sores and swellings. The berries were eaten fresh in July and August. The bark and berries have also been used to make a yellow or green dye.

I made this bowl for a friend Paul Hennon who retired after 30 years as our Park and Rec Director. This was turned green from a freshly cut Cherry tree in Community Park. I added symbolic wire bale around the beads. The bale was blackened with gun metal bluing and then sprayed with lacquer. The bowl was finished with Linseed oil and bees wax.

7” x 6 1/2” x 2” Cherry Bowl turned green and allowed to warp to a wavy oval shape.

SOLD: 11” x 2” Juniper Platter. This wood was from a tree in our front yard in Bend, Oregon. I carried this slab around for awhile before finally turning it into a platter or shallow bowl.
